- Central Venous Catheter Issues: We often use these veins for central venous access – placing a thin tube (catheter) for giving fluids or medications over a longer time. Sometimes, this can lead to complications like a perforation (a small hole in the vein), or a blood clot called upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Rarely, a pseudoaneurysm (a false bulge in the vein wall) can form.
- Stenosis (Narrowing): The vein can become narrowed. This can happen, for example, as a complication of an arteriovenous fistula created for dialysis access, which might involve the brachiocephalic vein.
- Tumors: Growths in the chest, either starting there (primary mediastinal tumors) or spreading from elsewhere (like metastatic breast cancer), can press on the brachiocephalic vein and block blood flow. This can cause swelling in the face, neck, and arms, a condition known as superior vena cava syndrome if the blockage is severe.
How Do We Check on These Veins?
